It should default to the DNS server that is remote to the VPN. Then use nslookup to see if your server on the remote site will resolve [example: server1].

Maybe that's the actual issue. You could try to query the DNS server directly that hold your DNS entries. Or change your VPN so that the actual DNS server is handed out.
